NEW Yellow Thistle Upcycled Cotton Watchcap

Yellow thistle is considered by some to be an invasive weed in New York, while others see it as one of the state’s most iconic field flowers. Its vibrant yellow can be spotted across the landscape in spring and summer, and we’ve brought that color to life using a very special yarn.

The Watchcap:

The product that has made us famous. Working with our non-profit partner in the Finger Lakes area of New York, we use a Syracuse-made Tompkins circular knitting machine to create a beautiful half-cardigan knit fabric we cut and sew here in New York City ourselves to create these vibrantly colored hats that are 100% made in New York State from start to finish.Ā

Content:

85% upcycled cotton 15% RPET

What is upcycled cotton yarn? This yarn is a blend of reclaimed cotton fibers from discarded garment scraps combined with a small amount of nylon made from the incredible RPET process of recycling plastic (PET) bottles into nylon fiber. Through a proprietary scrap fabric color matching system, there are no dyes or chemicals used in the process of creating such vibrant colors from what would otherwise be textile waste. Check out the processĀ HERE.

Washing Instructions:

Hand wash, lay flat to dry. Do not bleach.

If you want to shrink it after stretching, machine wash and dry.Ā

Source:

Yarn: This hat is made from RCotton, and the yarn is milled in Spain by Ferre, a centuries-old mill. Why Spain? Spain is home to the largest textile manufacturing factories in the world (Zara, anyone?) and is a country that is decades ahead of any other country in recycling post-industrial and post-consumer textile waste produced by these factories. We purchase this yarn from their American partner mill, Hickory Throwing,Ā in North Carolina.Ā

Production: Knit in Waterloo, NY, by our friends and knitting partners atĀ Mozaic Organization,Ā a not-for-profit employing, assisting, and providing services to thousands of disabled persons in the Finger Lakes, NY, area. The raw knit material is then shipped in rolls to our Greenpoint, Brooklyn, sewing facility, where it is cut, sewn, and finished by our lovely team.

Size Specs:

One Size Fits Most
Length: 11.5-12 inches (without fold)

Knit cotton is prone to stretch, so if your hat feels a bit tight when you receive it, wearing it will quickly adjust it to your head. If you feel your hat starts to loosen too much over time, you can give it a handwash in warm water or machine wash in cold, lay it flat to dry, and it should spring right back.

Cotton is a lighter material, so these hats are meant to be worn as transitional hats. If you would prefer a warmer option, take a look at our upcycled wool watch caps!Ā .

Fit:

The watch cap is a style that's existed for well over 100 years, though it's most commonly associated with WWII US Navy personnel. A watch cap is a shorter hat, traditionally meant to be worn folded above the ears. However, we have updated ours to reflect a need to wear it in any way someone prefers. Want to wear it traditionally? Fold it above the ears. Want to wear it like a beanie? Pull it down back behind the ears with a short fold. No fold? We have even put a double-sided label to wear it like a skullcap with no fold! Please keep in mind these are half-cardigan knits, meant to retain shape and fit tight!
